Cut down this dead standing red oak. Didn't question my ID cause it was standing with numerous other red and white oaks that had some leaves, bark same as other reds, smells exactly like pissy red oak, oak grain, numerous leaves around base, and color/density where right. After I cut up some of the long branches at home I noticed almost no rays if at all. A few have hair fine rays. I'm pretty good at ID, but this one is an oak anomole. I can say it's certainly not a hickory, ash, locust, cherry, maple, walnut or mulberry. Everything says oak, except rays. Anyone have a similar experience?

I see the Rays very clearly in the 3rd picture.
Yeah, but that is like one of the few pieces that has them and even then they are really hard to see. There are no visible rays on most of the rounds, like in the last pic. Just can't believe it.

OK what's a ray?

Here's an average piece with rays. They travel from the center out crossing through the growth rings. Some have more or less, but are almost always very visible in oak.

Ahhhh, guess I never really paid attention.
Me too. Grew up with loggers/aborists for neighbors and burned for 25 years before really learning my stuff from this forum. Very grateful for its help.
