I finally broke down and went to the bank and told 'em what I wanted to do (i.e. install a wood stove and buy a backup generator) and that I wanted to rent $5000. I left the application, went home and almost immediately got an approval call, on my signature alone. Took him 35 minutes to decide.

SO, now I'm ready to pull th' trigger. I've been leaning so far toward the Fireview that I've 'bout fell over! BUT, now that B-day is here, is there any other contender out there that wishes to come forward? Originally, I wanted a 3.0 cf, rear vent, non-cat, but could not find any dealers who would sell and service, since they are all more than 100 miles from me. Sifted through several brands, but none would deal direct . . . except Woodstock and they don't make a non-cat stove. BUT, they will deal direct with the consumer and have been very helpful so far.

So, that's the road I'm traveling until/unless someone can suggest a better stove. It has to be rear vent and I'd like a 3.0 cf capacity. Otherwise I'm open. I have to have the deal done by 31 Dec. for a number of reasons.

My place is 2400 sf with 1800 on the main level. Thanks--

GONE! BUY THE FIREVIEW!

Well, let's see, Todd, why might you be such a FV enthusiast??

Listen to him. He is one guy here that has burned them all from the old boxes right through the EPA reburn stoves to the cat soapstone. He knows of what he speaks.

Everyone here seems happy with the FV, I stopped into a stove shop in northern Mass last wekend and they had one burning, nice stove with a big box.

C'mon now, Bart, I was just sandpaperin' Todd a tad. I'm 99% sure I'm gonna get the FV. 'SIdes, I don't know of any other contenders, since I've looked at ALL of 'em at least 5 times! I've got to get busy and design my wall/mantel and floor protection and get 'em built. Been talkin' to a WS guy for several days. Have been impressed with his willingness to answer questions and make suggestions and so on. Everyone who has said how helpful they are is right on the money.

I sure wish the planned WS stove was out. According to a very reliable source, the stove will be vintage WS/FV, but with about a 3.0 cf box and probably an ash dump. He said it would probably be out in maybe two years, but definitely less than five, given the nature of R & D.

Hey, you send me your address on a PM and I'll send you some seasoned flour for makin' your CFS! You may have had it all your life, like I have, but I'm here to tell you, that stuff makes the best CFS and gravy you've EVER wrapped your choppers around! You MIGHT have it up there, but I'd bet you don't. It's Western Star Seasoned Flour. Send me your address and I'll get some to you. Got mine in Plainview at the ADM plant when I did an investigation there. It smelled so good in the front seat of the pickup, that I nearly broke into it right there on the side of the road and ate it straight from the sack! It's that good!

Terry it sounds like your mind is pretty well made up. Pretty easy now; just pick up the phone and call. It is even an 800 number so doesn't even cost you a dime.

Furthermore, where can you get a guarantee like you get with Woodstock? Besides that, they really stand behind their stoves and will do you right.

Good luck and Merry Christmas.

Fireviews are really nice. In New England people drive right up to the factory and they will load it into your pickup w/ a discount too. If my hearth could accept a side loader I would have bought one of their stoves. They burn like the Dickens too...

Hey Dennis! Thanks! You and all the rest of y'all have been spot on! These folks are great!

I could use some ideas about how to protect a mantel that will be about 2 to 3 feet above the stove. I'm planning to close off the 2 x 3' FP opening with something that stands on the floor, just away from the wall. I could benefit from ya'll's experience in this area. Think y'all could send some pics of how you installed your FV? Any suggestions/tips/etc would be welcome!

Pacific Energy Summit: simple operation, no faddish and fading soapstone, life time warrantee, etc. . .

EDIT - And you'll have plenty of that $5k left for the genny.

Going ONCE . . . going TWICE . . .

Didn't see this first time around. Por que?

Went to Amarillo today to look as stoves at the Fireplace Shoppe. Didn't see anything even close except the Lopi Leyden, which has a neat (as in prevents a mess) ash dump and blower capability and is the same interior size as the FV. Nice looking stove, but after price compared to WS FV came in at nearly $400 more (and that was without shipping, crating, etc.), I decided enough was enough. They quoted me a 25' liner (where the WS guys quoted 30') 'cause they didn't have the 30'. By the time apples had been compared to apples they were $400 more with me driving to Amarillo to get it (125 miles one way!) I really wish the FV was bigger and had an ash dump, BUT it is what it is--so I'm taking the advice of the Hearth.com braintrust and gettin' it anyway.

BTW, anyone ever installed their own SS liner on a steep roof? Is the liner heavy? I would think SS would be. Oh, and should I have the current 8" chimney cleaned before I install the SS liner? If anyone has pointers, I'm all ears. Thanks--

A ash pan is crap and you will use it maybe twice. They are a PITA not the second coming. Stainless liners are broil foil. The weigh zip. Order the freakin Fireview and insulated liner and get out a ladder.

If you had been at San Jacinto we would all be speaking Spanish right now. :coolsmirk:

WOW! All that snow IS makin' you cranky! :-) I said I AM ordering it. Whew! I was just bein' diligent!

AND since when could not 1000 Texans whip 6000 or 10,000 of anything else, even WITH a coffee break? C'mon, Bart, you know better than that!

Since you brought it up: It is an historical fact that on several occasions, Santa Anna expressed his distinct "lack of interest" (to put it euphemistically) in fighting the Texans, even WITH a huge numerical superiority. He did it anyway, but even he knew how it was gonna turn out. When it took him so long to overcome 148 Texans with 4,000 troops at the Alamo, the eventual outcome wasn't much of a head scratcher!

Okay, all you non-Texas folks tune out for a minute:
Had CFS this afternoon at Chilly Willy's in Amarillo. They have a widespread reputation for the best CFS in the southwest. Lynda had normal CFS, but I had the CFS on a lake of normal cream gravy and, get this, green chile sauce with a few shreds of Mexican cheese on top! The waitress suggested it and I had misgivings, BUT it was good! Since you brought up CFS last night, we just had to have some. I might never eat it the "regular" way again . . . I said MIGHT!

That bag of seasoned flower for CFS is waiting for your address, ol' fella! Send me a PM if you want it, or not!

Terry, we wish you luck and you will be happy with that Fireview.

Funny that the Lopi Leyden was one of our top choices when we were looking at new stoves. Then one day after we'd had the Fireview for several months I happened to stop at that shop who sold the Lopi stoves. The Leyden they had on display was all taken apart so I got to the fellow who does installation. He told me of some warpage problems they'd been having on several of them including their display model. Lopi stood behind them....but this was the second time already for their display model! Dang, I sure do like this Fireview.

Good luck to you.

EDIT: We just built a hearth for the stove; 16" high. That way we don't have to bend or squat when loading. We sit on a chair right by the firedoor and load. Much easier on the back that way.

Hey Dennis! Thanks! Any chance gettin' some photos of your installation? I'm toying with some designs and would like to see others, especially serious woodburners.

GUESS WHAT,Y'ALL !!!!!!!!

My sweetie called me from work today and said that one of her mates at work has a Fireview in their home about 6 miles due east of our place! Could not believe it. Then he invited us to come see it. So we did. First time I've seen one in person!! They had just lit it and it was already up around 300 according to the thermometer. Sure is a small unit, but it seems to put out the heat! Their place is an older 2-story and has no other heat source than the stove, which they say does a great job. I noticed that the heat really pours through the window in front. It is also a very visually pleasing thing.

It really seems like Woodstock has got the customer service thing perfected. I have no complaints with my dealer, but Woodstock sounds like a great operation. Companies like that, you always come out of the deal feeling good, unlike buying a car...

You got THAT right! Car buyin' is one of the most "dishonest" processes opent to the general public! Been there (both sides of the desk), didn't like that!

Tex, you remind me of what we went through before buying our Fireview.

Also an apology. I forgot you asked for a picture and here is one we took during installation.

[Hearth.com] Okay, I've got $5000 to spend . . .

EDIT: I hit post too soon. The hearth we built is 16" high and a lot larger than what is actually needed but has worked out even better than we thought it would. Having it built up 16" means we can sit while loading the stove rather than having to bend down or kneel. The extra room gives us a place to dry gloves, boots or whatever after coming in from cutting wood or pushing snow, etc.

I'm puttin' in my plug for the Woodstock Classic. I think it's the best looking stove in the Woodstock stable. I know sitting in front of the stove and gazing at the flames has about zero draw for me. All I care about is that the stove is attractive and burns efficiently. We have one of each, the Fireview was the husband's choice (of course; men like fire, after all!) and the only way I could get him to spring for a "new" stove without marital strife lo those many years ago. The Classic was my preferred choice and it took me about 10 nanoseconds to order one when we built the "bahn" and my studio!

LOL, for real? I think it is the stupidest looking stove ever. It looks like they forgot to put in a window. To each his own.

The studio looks a lot different now. The floor is finished (wish I'd done it black and not taupe!) and there are now several sewing machines and work benches in the space, but this is a shot of the Classic in situ. I'm sorry I don't have a more recent shot, the Classic is a truly handsome stove.

Looks great Bobbin. Very clean install.
