Last year i installed a new Osburn 2400i wood stove insert into existing fireplace. I lined the chimney. I am very impressed with the heat this stove generates. How ever there seems to be a drafting problem. When i need to put more wood in some smoke tends to escape into the living room from the stove while door is open. There is a baffle system and the path for the smoke to go out is right above the door. chimney is located on side of house and is approx 20' high.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

We'll need a little more information. Is this a first floor or a basement installation? Interior or exterior chimney? Was the liner insulated?

One thing to try is opening a nearby window about an inch to see if that helps the problem. If it does, this may be a negative pressure situation. The other thing to check is the flue cap screen. Examine it closely to make sure it isn't getting clogged.

It is a ranch style house...Stove is located on first floor. Chimney is exterior on side of house. Liner is not insulated as i would not be able to fit it in to chimney with the insulation.

I tried opening exterior door when loading wood but saw no difference.

I have the pe summit stove with 6" insulated selkirk chimney which runs outside as well, and my stove also lets some smoke out when i open the door. There is nothing you can do to stop this unless you change your chimney to the inside and run pipe straight up.

Are you turning off the fan when you reload?
My fan must have sucked up an ember somehow once and it melted part of a fan blade.

Ironically, I found your post while looking for the dimensions of the firebox for the 2400i.

I bought one and had it installed last year and have the exact same problem. I posted here last year actually (https://www.hearth.com/talk/threads/11372/). I've been through it all.

A few weeks ago, I started looking around again at options. I contacted some places who tried to sell me a vacu-stack, promising it would solve the problem. I called Rich there, super helpful guy. We had a 15 minute conversation about drafting.

Pretty much summed my problem up to the double elbow that the installer had to use to get the stove into my fireplace/chimney connection point for the liner. He said each elbow is equivalent of a 15' additional run. And.. think of the smoke as ping pong balls. The cap is considered another bend.

Do you know how your stove went in?

I'm now debating the exhausto fan which is why I'm after the box dimensions. <sigh>
