Just went to load the stove and had a split rub up against the side. Some of the paint just flaked off. Is this normal? I didn't think I was running so hot that the paint would come off.

Is this inside the combustion chamber? I'm not familiar with the stove, and the pic looks like it might be in there. If so, I wouldn't expect any paint to last when in contact with that kind of heat, even if it is "high temperature paint". Now, if it is outside the combustion chamber, I'd think the paint would last longer and I'd probably call the mfgr to see if the got a bad batch.

Yes, it was a new insert. It's the series C insert which is fairly new. Maybe they have started painting this area or someone just went overboard.

It could be there to keep rust from forming if the insert had to sit in storage for a while too. It's harder to sell a unit for top dollar if there's rust on it!

Could just be overspray on an unprimed area. I wouldn't worry about it unless you see an issue with paint on the external surfaces.

The paint knows it doesn't belong in there, so it's leaving.

Mine (series B) has black metal parts inside the firebox, always assumed they were painted. I would say something (in writing) to the dealer about it. Just to get it on record in case there are additional problems that might be related to this, necessitating a warranty claim. And I'd probably want a free can of paint as well. There were some parts (firescreen extra) and inside the air exhaust that weren't painted well on mine and got a free can of stove bright black metal (iirc) to take care of it.
