Id like a well insulated place but i wouldnt want to go too far as i would not have any use for the woodstove anymore. ;em

curious what the sentiment around here is now, 8 years later.

passive houses still not worth it (economically)? i'm sure there have been dramatic strides in the industry.

i'm mostly just curious because i will likely soon be moving from the PNW to the canadian rockies, and a new home build is probably in the future.

IMO a Pretty Good House is still a better proposition. The price of solar has dropped significantly and with net metering its pretty easy to end up with a net zero home. In most cases the major source of heat is usually the electric heating coil on the outdoor air line after it goes through the air to air heat exchanger. Some folks have even gotten creative and went with a earth tube on the inlet to the air to air unit and did away with the heater.
