Where do pellet mills source the wood to make pellets? I have heard some use sawdust. I found a few pine needles in a bag of north americans the other day suggesting that they use raw trees. Thought it is interesting how different sources of wood may effect price and quality.

Different companies and mills use different sources to make their pellets -- Turman, for example, which is a hardwood flooring company, uses sawdust from the flooring side of the house to make pellets. It's the consistency of their source that makes them a consistent pellet. Not all pellet makers have such a consistent source, and that can lead to variance in quality.
