Pellet NooB - Installation question

Hello!

After the sticker shock for LP, $5.95 a gallon with a minimum purchase of 200 gallons or 100 gallons at the same price plus $100 delivery fee, I decided to take the plunge and get a pellet stove. I purchased a Breckwell Big E earlier this week. I want to install it this weekend and I'm trying to figure out the needed supplies for my install. I am getting DuraVent 3" pipe. My main question is what is the actual amount of vertical rise for the T and of the 90 degree elbow? I am trying to figure out how much pipe to get and what lengths.....

I've read through a lot of posts already!! This site seems like a really great site!!

Any other thoughts or info would be much appreciated!

I did a lot of research on this site! I also have a relative that also has this stove and is working well for them... From what I can tell most stoves have their issues with some being better or worse...... Keeping my fingers crossed though!!

Congrats on the stove. Make sure you have surge protection and a CO detector. Floor protection as well...

Need to be careful on EVL - elbows and cleanouts are = 5' vertical length, horizontal sections = 1' per foot, vertical = .5' per foot. Usually total of 15' means you need to use 4" exhaust venting rather than 3".

I always recommend that you put in an OAK (outside air kit). Helps the stove burn better and you aren't wasting money throwing warm inside air outside through the exhaust while not creating drafts.

Get more pipe than you think you need and return after the project is done. Don't forget something to seal pipe joints, self bonding silicone tape is nice. Often found in electrical dept.

What a coincidence, I went out Friday morning and purchased a Big E also! Did you get the classic model or the Big E - 2

Not a lot of love here for the Big E...been running since 2008, have most things figured out, every once in awhile a new quirk comes up, but the technology is such that most issues are easy to fix

Do you sift your pellets Big E? My friend got some Nations Choice pellets by the people who make the Infernos and almost instantly jammed his Big E ! ! !

Never...Used New England Pellets for 3 years and 2 years since used Barefoots. I had auger jam once, 2 years ago, my brother had his jam once and my mom's jammed this year. take the plate off and vacuum once a year and no issues

Finally got the stove installed and fired up I'll post pictures when I get the chance. After being frustrated with getting the pipe through the thimble I went back to the place where I bought the venting just to find out they had given me the wrong brand of thimble for the pipe, different dimensions!! I had already sheetrocked and taped plus redid the vinyl siding to now have a smaller thimble! Arggg Now I need to redo the vinyl siding again, gonna wait for warmer weather to do that. Moral of the story, make sure the component brands match and try the pieces together prior to installation

I did install an OAK. Went to my local auto parts store and bought muffler flex pipe and clamp to attach to the stove then coupled that together with PVC on the outside of the house using a 2" long rubber/metal clamp that is used to connects PVC to cast iron plumbing pipe . The muffler pipe doesn't get warm from the stove at all so I believe the clamp and PVC will work out fine. The one thing I don't have is a nice looking "wall plate" that covers the pipe going through the wall. I spent less than $15 on the OAK though.

I bought my BigE new on ebay from a guy in Long Island NY to heat my garage about 3 seasons ago. Had it shipped to PA via freight all for much less than they are new. It was still in the crate when I got it. I also bought a Breckwell wireless thermostat. I have had issues running it on that thermostat on/off mode since day 1. It would shut off a few times a week with no apparent issues and all I had to do was turn it back on via the control panel and it would fire right back off and continue burning. I contribute that issue to the control board, which I did replace once but continued to have the same issue, albeit much, much less. This year I decided to bite the bullet and just run it on manual 24/7, heat level 2. No issues this season yet. Keeps my 1000sq ft garage at an average of 63.7 degrees (avg for the last month 1/6 to 2/6/14) on about a bag a day. Average outside temp durin this same time frame was 23.5. I do not sift my pellets and it burns anything I put in it. Have never had an auger jam or any issue with fines. I buy the cheap stove, the cheap pellets and heat for cheap cheap cheap! I would have no problem buying another BigE for when I build my pole building 30x40 garage.

I would definitely buy another too! Heat level 2 for these days, 3 for 10 degrees and 4 for really cold days!

By the way, never had a t-stat hooked up, No ESP to go bad, replaced parts as they wear out...very simple technology. Never had an OAK hooked up, but am considering tinkering this summer just for kicks!

Hello gentleman,
New here and new to pellet stoves.
Allot of great info here on what seems to be a popular entry level stove (seemingly due to the price).

I have also purchased a used Big-E it is roughly 7-8 years old with what seems to be minimal use. I THINK I got a good deal from a local stove dealer at $850 out the door. most that I have seen locally on CL are between 1000-1200.

ANYWAY,
I am curious as to what accessories are available for this, Breckwell's site (obviously) caters to there current line up but no real mention of stuff for there older stoves. I am also curious about if this has the air wash.
This is what I know; electronic control, auto ignite, no ash pan, 4800BTU.

You definitely have an ash pan...held in by the two knobs in the base. Has air wash, built in the door glass at the base. 48,000 btu's. Make sure you give her enough air to breathe. I go by the rule heat 2, pull air out to threads, heat 3, finger width more, 4, another finger width

What a coincidence, I went out a week ago Friday morning and purchased a Big E also! There was a cheaper model made with the very small fire door glass that had no ash pan.
I got the arched and large fire door glass with the ash pan. Please post some pics of your Big E.
