Pellet Stove venting from finished basement

What would be the best way to vent a pellet stove in a finished basement ( poured concrete foundation with insulated/ drywall interior walls and a drop ceiling throughout). Prior owner had pellet vent going up and out with a 2’ horizontal run between floor joists . Is this safe and to code? Or do I core drill foundation and go up and out through wall with a thimble ? And if I core drill foundation how large of a hole do I make ? Pipe diameter or wall thimble diameter? Just want to do it right and do it ONCE!

The book will tell you how much clearance you need between combustibles. Ours goes up into the floor joists and out. We had to cut the joists and add headers to support the floor above.

Your thimble needs to be long enough for both sides to reach to keep clearance inside the wall.

Another thing to pay attention to is height above ground. Ours is barely a foot off the ground (which is probably not to code). Thankfully when we got 20 inches of snow overnight I had it on constant burn, so the heat from the exhaust melted the snow in a big circle around the outlet. Otherwise we would have had a serious problem while we slept.

Ok so here’s the location ,as you can see drop ceiling and finished walls in basement. Once I’m outside of the house I will be going up 12’ or so with a cap and will be using 4” pipe the entire length

A picture would be helpful. A 4 inch hole is what I drill for 3 inch Duravent. The OD of the 3 inch is roughly 3 3/4 inches.

What does your pellet stove recommend for clearances for venting? What does the venting manufacturer recommend for clearances?

Those are the clearances that you need to follow. As long as you follow manufacturers recommendations as a minimum clearance, you should be fine. Both the stove and the venting should be UL approved, or equivalent testing. It has been tested and approved to meet those clearances listed by the manufacturers.

Are there operating windows on both sides? Code in most cases is 6 feet.

Mine goes right up through the drop ceiling, into the joists and out through the outside wall to the outside. That would be a lot easier than digging a pit and going out through your block wall. And you also wouldn't be potentially creating a point for water to leak into your nicely finished basement.

Just cut a hole in the ceiling tile with a couple inches of clearance (whatever the book says). It's not the prettiest thing to do, but if you're careful with the saw you can make a nice circle at least. If you want it to look more professional, you could probably get a thimble to go through it so you'd have a nice metal ring around it.

You could cut your round hole and set the thimble on top of the drop ceiling, so the ring protrudes down... something...
