We are selling our old Buck Stove insert to go back to a free standing woodstove, and are looking at either a used Grandpa Bear or a Mama Bear, both on craigslist. We have a two story house, brick, stays cold, and the stove will be in our living/dining room downstairs - pretty open area next to the stairway to the upstairs. I saw somewhere on the internet someone complaining that the Grandpa/ma series stoves didn't burn as well as the front-to-back Mama/Papa series.

Any thoughts or suggestions for us on which stove might suit our needs best? Any truth to the assertion that the single door models work better?

We just missed a used Vermont Castings Encore, but really just want a great, reliable airtight woodstove.

Many thanks for your help Coaly - keep up the good work, the posts are fascinating!
