Here is a pretty good link showing the bark on a white oak by size. According to this the large white oaks have scaly broad plates similar to the pieces I have.

The tree was a nut tree that is the reason it was removed. The person who had it taken down was older and didn't want to deal with the clean up anymore. It's hard stuff and will burn good so I'm fine with whatever it is.

I can believe it's Chestnut, if not Maple. I've never had my hands on any Chestnut- but would like to. ;-)
