I have an Englander Madison on it's way. I'm planning my hearth and my wife wants it as close to the walls as possible (of course). The manual lists it's rear clearance as 7.5 and side as 17.5, regardless if it's a single or double wall chimney connection. That's my interpretation after reading another thread on the Madison. I am choosing double wall to improve the draft in a shorter chimney.

If I space durock an inch off from the existing drywall I can then have my stove 3.75" from the rear and 8 3/4 from the side, existing drywall (nearest combustible) Then I can place whatever non-combustible finish be it tile or soapstone over that. Which would end up being even closer to the stove, obviously.

Please, put my brain to rest so I can plan this thing!

You can use an approved wall shield to reduce minimum clearance to combustibles ONLY if the manufacturer of the appliance explicitly states that it's acceptable in the owner/installation documentation applicable to the specific model you're installing. Refer to your manual, then if you think you want to build a protective wall shield, refer to NFPA 211. We can help you with that. Rick

Thanks Fossil. I just searched the manual again and it never mentions using NFPA 211. Solves that question, thanks.

If it's going to say anything about it, it'll likely be a small-print footnote on the page that shows minimum CTC's/has the dimensioned installation diagrams. If you want further clarification, just call Englander tech support...they're top notch. Rick

ETA: The term "NFPA 211" may never show up. It might use a term like "protected wall", or some such.

The NFPA 211 reduction methods can be used but in your case it will not allow a reduction in the rear clearance. The closest any reduction method in 211 you can get is 12". If it is already below 12" you will not be able to reduce it further. in the side you may, but again not below the 12"

As with every rule, it appears there are exceptions. I noted the other day that there are some tables in some manuals that allow the user to reduce a clearance below 12" with an approved wall shield. In this specific case, the stove testing and manual trump NFPA general non-UL stove rules, no?

Yes if the OM says otherwise then it is otherwise. The 12" is if the OM doesn't give exceptions...thanks for pointing that out BG I'm so use to just dealing with my stuff and given that answer all day long...:)
