Prepping for winter...

I know it's summer but I stacked up three tons of Energex pellets in the garage yesterday! Picked a nice dry, non-muggy day to do it. We average 2.5 tons each winter, except last winter where we used all three tons and still had a month of cold weather left!

Seems that more pellet stove owners are getting a much earlier start on gathering for winter after the shortages and price hikes of last year. I got all our stoves ready and only really need to pickup the last ton of prepaid pellets to be completely ready stove wise. Watching the news weather and several areas of the nation had the coolest July on record. What's next winter to be?

My normal winter consumption is 3 1/2 tons. I normally buy 4 tons in the spring so I start the heating season with 4 tons plus whatever is left over from the year prior. This year I increased my spring purchase to 6 tons plus added 10" of R30 insulation in my attic. My wife thinks I'm crazy. I call it prepared.

Ya never know, that Polar Vortex might rear it's head again. You'll be at peace if it does. We moved to New England in March 2013 and had our first experience with snow shovels. But it was a nice, 7-year-old rental with natural gas: energy-efficient and toasty warm without costing too much. One year later we bought an all-oil home. In the few cold weeks since this March we filled the tank twice and cried at the thought of oil bills this winter. The pellets and stove are on their way. We could barely afford them but had to choose between hurting now or hurting more later. Most people say they use 3-4 tons, so we got 5.

Is this "stockpile pellets so you can sleep better" idea what others call being a pellet pig?

Other than some light hearted ribbing from my friends and family, noone has had anything negative to say about my stash. I have the luxury of sufficient space inside to store this amount of pellets. Some of my pellet burning friends are forced by space constraints to buy smaller quantities all winter long making them more vulnerable to shortage and price spikes. I will gladly share my surplus with anyone in need.

still waiting on 2 tons pre-ordered Energex Golden Premiums.[0.5 ash].... we'll see if the Golds live up to the hype..Never seem to find anyone here who has used The Goldens.

it's a friends truck and he told the dealer to go ahead and put both pallets in it..
said he's hauled that much weight before..
the damned truck was very level with all that weight although couple tires we're down a lot..
we only had to go less than a mile from dealers wharehouse to my house.

That's a very neatly done stacking job. You could work as a bagger with pallets looking like that.

got mine ordered last week to be delivered the 29th of August for $15. for the load
i got 2 tons mwp $224/ton and 2 tons $289/ton for LeCrete...
gonna be my first year trying the LeCretes...
i heard nothing but good about these pellets....

we were in an Industrial Park to pick up the load.
only on a public highway for 1/4 mile.
dealers wharehouse and my house are 1/2 mile apart...

yeah...no biggie.
when I said Industrial park, I'm talking Gravel road old style... Not the Asphalt paved modern Commerce Parks..
biggest danger was getting a flat tire...probably less than 1/4 mile from there to my house on a dead end street no less...small 300 yr old town..

Be doing it again when my Golden Hardwoods come in this month.
beats payin 70 bucks delivery for 1/2 mile travel.

If it's so close why wouldn't you go the safe route and make two quick trips??? Would only add like ten minutes.

Sorry about sideways picture,still have not got the hang.Knowing trucks,that better be a dana 60 rear or it is probably bent.Only bad thing,if you have a flat,will have to unload truck to change or will probably bent the frame,even with the big rear.
