propane conundrum

Doesn't really look like a tee, but I guess it is. What controls the rubber disc that switches between the two sides ? Does it allow refilling one tank without turning eveything off ?

So I'd either snatch the first-state regulator from the propane company's tank when they remove it (but it's really old), or buy a new one, and plug this into it. Then connect my two 40lb tanks to it.
Yes, the disc closes off the low pressure side so you can remove empty cylinder for filling.
 
Yeah, looks like just the ticket. EXCEPT ... reading back over the info about propane boiling off (thanks for that education), it seems unlikely a 40-lb tank can support a cooktop. Although I suppose it's possible the tee fitting might allow both tanks to contribute.

Does that make sense ? Is the reason most smaller tanks can't be re-filled on site have to do with the valving on top, and not just with the policy of the propane suppliers ? The valve sure looks like the one on my current 120-gal tank (that I'm renting from Suburban).
They can fill them on site. My house has 2 100lb bottles, that no one will fill (I own them, both are about a year old), so I lug them to whosever has the cheapest propane and fill em.

They make up BS excuses, even though most of my neighbors have propane delivery (much bigger bottles).

I love my propane stove, but if we renovate the kitchen it’s gone so I don’t have to keep filling these tanks using my truck.

I feed mine (6-burner stove /oven) off of the 100s. One is always off, and I get about a year out if it (summer, fall, spring cabin).

I’d bet a 50 lb bottle will do pretty well.

I have no problem with 30k btu in zero degree weather. My oven at the cabin is 40k btu. I’ve run that off the tank in freezing weather, but never down at zero or negatives.
 
Come to think of it, I do know people running regular stoves off 20lb tanks in the same area as my cabin. That means they can cook in, well, I’ve seen -23F up there. It gets colder.

Yes, I have friends that run their full-size gas stove on a 40# bottle.
