Does the outer metal casing have to remain completely clear? Can we brick on top of it or overlap at all? If it needs to be completely free for removal or maintenance, please let me know! Currently we're about to install and our contractor is going to inset it in the brick. It wont be able to be removed though- wasn't sure if this was going to be a problem! Any info is appreciated!

It should be removable. How are blowers replaced? One probably needs to remove it to remove the liner but that’s not a common (10-25 year lifespan for the liner).
It will collect a lot of dust and dirt back there that will burn off when it gets hot. I like to clean mine off before the first fire every year.

Do you see how it’s about to be set recessed in the wall? Our concern is that the outer casing won’t be able to be lifted up at all! The outer layer of brick fascia was cut away to expose the real brick underneath

You need to be able to get to the fasteners that secure the surround. Some times they just slide the unit out a bit or the fasteners are accessible from the front. As long at the surround is removable and it’s ok if it takes a bit of. Time and effort it would be ok with me.
If it where me I would see if I could just put the surround on and slide it all back. It doesn’t need to be air tight. That’s what a blockoff plate is for.

As long as the insert can be slid out it is ok, but the insert surround should not be bricked in so tight that it is unremovable. There should be a gap between the surround and the brick. Use a black gasket or at least black silicone to fill the gap between the surround and the brick.
It's too late now but I would have considered installing it without the surround if it fit inside of the arch, then had a custom surround fabricated to fill in the gaps.
