We've been using our stove for almost two weeks now, reading the manual and watching the dvd that came with it to learn more about it. The dvd says that if the hopper lid or door is left open, an icon will appear on the remote and that it will shut down the stove after a certain amount of time for safety reasons. My question is how long does it take for this icon to show up and for the stove to shut off? We had the hopper open for seven minutes and no icon, no shutoff. I want to make sure the stove is operating properly. Thanks!

I don't have that stove but I'm sure someone will come along so I gave you a bump. Here is the troubleshooting manual that I found for that stove. I don't know if that will help or not but it has some useful info in it. (broken link removed to http://www.mortonsstoves.com/wp-content/uploads/Quadra-Fire-Mt-Vernon-Troubleshooting-Manual.pdf)

All newer Quad stoves are suppose to have a switch on the hopper lid so when it is open, it shuts the auger off. And the icon should show almost immediately, and shut fuel off at the same time. It is either bad or bad connections on wire harness. Usually if anything is wrong, even top of stove not centered perfectly, it won't feed. If it is new, time to call dealer to service. kap

I'm wondering if the wall control was not connected properly. I have almost no faith in my installers as they seem less than competent. Where exactly is the switch on the hopper lid? I'd like to check to make sure it's there and not stuck. The stove seems to feed properly and turns off at the desired temp.

It is on the right hinge. Use a mirror and flashlight to see it. It is the same mangetic switch that is on the door hinge(oops handle). kap

I have a magnet stuck to the side of my stove, so when I want to play in the firebox and when the auto-clean is going, I put it on the undoor side of the switch, fooling it into thinking the door is closed. kap

OK - I see something that looks like a little silver button - about the size of a dime. Is that it? Is there a way to test if it's working?

You, not really. When the hopper door is closed, that silver button swings back into position by the magnet that is attached to the flat metal mounting tab. That makes the contact that lets the auger feed. When door is opened, it breaks contact telling controls to stop feeding. You need to call your dealer to replace. kap

Does the icon light up when you have the firebox door open?

Thanks Kap. Can't wait to get all these issues straightened out so I can just enjoy my stove.

No, the icon for the hopper doesn't light up. That's what made us think something was wrong.
Haven't checked the one for the firebox door yet. My husband thought that if the decorative doors were opened there should be an icon but I told him just the glass door. We still have to try that one.

Yes, it is on the glass door. You will get a better view of the switch when you open that door. kap

There are two magnetic switches on this stove. For the hopper, it is on the right upper corner, when looking at the hopper from the top. You will see two small black rectangles. Within a second of lifting the hopper lid, my wall control notes the lid is open. The switch is an override for the feed motor (there is also one on the glass door). The fire will burn it self out in a few minutes. Is your stove the Mt. Vernon AE, or the Mt. Vernon E2? I'm talking about the Mt. Vernon AE.

When I looked under the hopper lid with the flashlight and mirror, I saw a silver metal rectangle with some type of wire attached and there was one black rectangle on it. Maybe it's missing a black rectangle? We have the MVAE.

I will open the door after it cycles off again to check that switch. If that one works at least I know it has something to do with the hopper switch and not the entire wall control or wiring.

Thanks for helping me figure this out everyone.

Sorry it's a single rectangle. Here is mine.

Mine looks a little different - maybe it was installed incorrectly. Have to see if I can get a better look at it.

Hi PelletGirl,

Sorry you guys are still having some stove issues with your MV AE.

Did you get your venting leak / smoke smell issue resolved OK? I think you had talked about using silicone tape on the vent connections ?

The switch on the lid on mine doesn't always work right. Most of the time when I open my lid the icon will show up on the thermostat and stop feeding. I have to tap my lid then the light icon goes off. Maybe you need to take your top lid off and reposition it?

Mystery solved! Two part solution actually. We removed the lid and then checked the wire connections in the back of the stove and it turns out that they put a bypass wire in so when we removed that, the icon lit up (yay!). However, when we replaced the lid, the icon did not go off. Hopper lid off again and, thanks to John193's photo, we realized the black rectangle thing was on upside down and wasn't making contact with the magnet. We reversed it and there ya go - icon on when hopper open, icon off when closed. We checked the door and the icon appears properly when opened and disappears when closed.

As for our smoke issue, the installer was back a week ago and sealed the pipes - or so we thought. He left the extra sealant in case we needed it. I think he used the wrong sealant because it says its some type of cement, not high temp silicone. I still don't see smoke but I smell it in the utility room once the blower goes to high speed, and then it disappears once the vacuum starts. I don't smell it near the stove any longer so I guess that part is resolved. It seems as if the smell is much stronger near the elbow that leads the vent through the outside wall, so we are going to buy the high temp silicone ourselves and seal it to see if that helps, and them move to tape if it doesn't. I feel like I should call the dealer again to get the installer back but honestly I don't want those incompetents in my house again.

Your stove must have been put together at 430 on a Friday. Strange that it arrived like that from factory.

Not sure if it came that way from the factory. It was a store display for about 12-18 months and rarely used. I don't know if the store installed the bypass so that the stove wouldn't stop as they were showing customers. And unless they replaced the switch (which I was told they did no repairs at all since they owned it as none were necessary) then I guess the switch was incorrectly installed at the factory.

I'm lucky to have all the help from everyone here as well as a mechanically inclined husband. The stove itself seems good to go now. Just working on the smoke smell at start up.

Ah. That's more clear now.

So, can you post a pic of that cement? I am beginning to think you need to find a good dealer, as the one you have seem less than perfect, to be kind about it. No installer of their own, and a rigged hopper switch? Not good...

And routinely smelling smoke at every startup is NOT NORMAL. You have a small leak, likely in/at the elbow, and it needs to be addressed. Some people tolerate that, but it's a LEAK. And an installer that tries to just glob on more silicone is just an idiot. New silicone can't adhere to old.

Icon works, does the auger quit running?
