Question on Vented Gas Log replacement

Hi...we currently have a vented gas log fireplace. We want to replace it with a non-vented insert that can also add heat the room. I was looking at direct vent products at a local dealer and thought they were very nice, but they are expensive. In talking with friends, they have indicated that we would be crazy to pay that much for an insert when you can get basically the same thing in a vent free insert for much cheaper. I have been trying to figure out the differences and have gained some knowledge on your website, but still have many questions. Generally, the product would likely be used at most for a few hours a day, in the evenings to throw some supplemental heat into the house. First, can either a direct vent or vent free product be used to replace vented gas logs that are in an existing fireplace with chimney? If so, what makes a direct vent product superior to a vent free one and worth all of the extra money? Thanks for any help...
