Hello! this is the first season we are using our new Woodstock Fireview stove. We love it but after burning it a few times, we now see a rainbow in a circle pattern in the corner of the glass. Woodstock said it's light reflecting on a protective film on the glass. That sounds like a fast answer. It's very annoying and blocks some of the view. Do you have any comments or advice? This just doesn't seem right. Thanks for your help.

It may be what I all get in the corners as the glass starts to blackened. Did you try cleaning the inside of the glass? I burn it off with a real hot fire, then the glass is crystal clear.

Very likely this is caused by some volatile gasses condensing on the relatively cool glass sometime early in the burn cycle. They create a thin film that causes diffraction of light similar to an oil slick on water, which is also a very thin film. If this continues to build up the glass will probably get hazy, then brownish. It is very common to have some degree of darkened glass, although with good hot burning of good dry wood the glass should mostly be clear with any darkened glass limited to the corners.

If it's bothering you, you can clean it off with the wet newspaper and ash method that is a favorite of many hearth.com'ers

I have a permanent stain on one of mine where one of the kid's doll's hair got too close:eek:. Yours will clean up just fine.

Thank you all for your responses. This is such a helpful community! Yes, the stain is on the inside and no, I haven't tried to clean it. The guy at Woodstock didn't suggest cleaning it so I assumed it's a permanent thing. I'll try the ash cleaning method suggested, which I'm thinking is just mixing a little water with the ash and rubbing? Any and all other comments/suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Before cleaning it though start rooting around in the ashes . . . maybe there's a pot of gold in there somewhere. ;) :)

On the serious side . . . I occasionally get the rainbow effect . . . typically goes away after cleaning or a hot fire.

Haha! No pot of gold but I did get rid of the rainbow. It was as simple as some rubbing with water and a bit of ash. Duh. I just assumed it was a permanent mark when the guy at Woodstock didn't offer any cleaning solution. So glad that wasn't the case. Thanks all for your help. You have come through for me once again.
