Question:

We are building a new home. Which is better, a raised hearth or a flush hearth? And why?

Answer:

I have always felt that a raised hearth is better for the following reasons:
1. Small children are less likely to play or crawl in it.
2. Objects (like newspaper) less likely to fall into it.
3. Fire is elevated so you can see it more directly from seated height.
4. Easier to tend the fire without bending over as much.
5. Dirt stays on hearth and does not spill over entire floor.

You do have to be careful that small children do not bump their heads on a raised hearth. There are padding products sold to prevent this.
