Really small insert?

A friend of mine has an old house with coal fireplaces. The fire boxes are really little.

24" high
20" wide
7.5" deep

Is there a gas insert that will fit into that?

I don't believe there's anything - insert wise - that will fit,
but others may chime in with something other than what I'm familiar with...
That being said, one choice is a hearth-mounted gas DV stove
which vents up thru the chimney.
While this look is aesthetically less desirable, we do it a lot in the older
Brown Stone homes in downtown Albany, as there really are few options...

That's too bad to hear, because the room he wants it in is small and he's using it as an office so there's not room for a free standing appliance.

what kind of heat does he have in the house now?
and is the chimney in working condition that is there on this little fireplace?
wondering if an little realistic electric unit would be something you friend would be willing to use.
the come really small...they have small size inserts and little free standing stoves.

The building has a natural gas furnace.

I'll mention the electric. About 15 years ago the furnace broke in the middle of winter, and the fireplaces were all put into use burning coal. It wasn't such a good idea -- coal soot and ash all over the place, and they really couldn't keep the building warm.

He's not really looking for heat (although sometimes he wants it warmer than his wife) -- mainly he just likes to see the fire.

The new mini gas stove by Woodstock Soapstone may work. I saw it last week and it is tiny!
Not an insert, but small and it will heat up one small room though...
