I've had a flashlight, and Tape measure lying on my hearth for about ten days while I tried to find a way to fit a Quadrafire 2700. I am now convinced that an insert will not fit in my fireplace. Is it safe to run the pipe from a rear exit stove into the fireplace, and up the chimney. If so, I think this may be my next attempt at wood heat.

I have an ~ 4 year old Heatilator and put a 2700i in there.
The installers had no complaints and I think the Heatilator was 36" the A36R model.
The stove exhausts at an angle which might make it easier.
Here is a thread on the subject, and I put some pics in there too:

Other people probably have put in larger inserts than I did in the same unit.

There was just another discussion about putting a stove in front of a ZC box. Let me find it...

If you have a true "Heatilator" brand ZC fireplace then a 2700 should fit, I have not come across one where it wont.

If you have a heatilator style fireplace, also known as a heatform, then who knows what it is, and in that case you may actually be able to put a stove in front of it.

Or you can tear out the fireplace, build an alcove and install a stove, that's what we did.
