I cut up a red maple tree recently. Css as of one month ago. Maybe 5 weeks ago. Split small, I was getting readings of between 28-30% on moisture meter. Warm weather with next to no rain has helped. I know that the the initial moisture of wood can drop fast. While I doubt this wood will be ready by this fall, what do you guys think about spring 17' for being ready?
 
That might be ready by this Fall if you are having the same weather we are here in PA., very hot and very little rain. I had a Norway Maple taken down several months ago and just put the wood on pallets to get it out of the way, don't need it as I am very blessed and loaded with future wood. I was planning on splitting this Maple next March for next Winter but it is already very dry, I hope it is okay until then! The tree was dying although it still had some solid spots in it so it already had a head start on drying, so you might be okay by this Fall, give it another check with your moisture meter in a few months!
 
Same weather here for sure. Live on se ct shore which hasn't even caught any tstorm passing through. Can't remember last time we had measurable rain. Will wait to top cover
 
I have burned Silver maple after just 1 summer. Cut and split in march. Burned just fine. Moisture meter said anywhere between 23% and 15%
 
i have burned box elder that I took down in april and was burnable in november. it wasn't the driest, but it was burnable. if you have the time to wait, i would. I am excited to have some stuff that has been drying for over a year now...

Makes sense. Been burning for 3 years and still have not gotten over the first year blues with wet wood and all of that stuff. Last year went well and this year should be best yet. Have plenty, which feels good. Mostly hand split which makes me feelmeven better...and sorer
