Removing Jotul Kennebec / Tamarack Help Needed ASAP

I just scored an AMAZING deal on a Jotul Tamarack (same as Kennebec with different surround), but the catch is I have to get it in the next few hours as the person who is selling it is moving out of his house TODAY! (Hence the great deal). I am about 99 percent sure that this is the insert for me (had been speaking to a dealer about this particular model), and in a worse case, it is so cheap I can resell easily. The seller told me it is in great shape, but the person who bought his house wants it out. The seller has all manuals, but with the tight time frame, the following info will help me greatly.

Here's what I need to know:

1) How long will it take me to remove this/get it in my car?

2) What tools will I need?

3) Can I move it with one other person (we're both pretty strong) and will it fit in my minivan with the back seats down? (I know I can move the firebricks out and take off the door to make it lighter, but it's listed as weighing close to 500 pounds!)

4) Again, the seller told me he's been using it all winter and it's in great shape - that said, what should I look for in inspecting it?

WOW...some people are complete idiots. I would have LOVED if my house already had an insert!

I know my insert was pretty heavy. The guys use a hand truck and a furniture dolley to move it around.

Take some basic hand tools. #2 & #3 phillips, flat screwdrivers, vise grips, pliers, 1/4" drive socket set with nut driver, maybe a smaller and bigger adjustable wrenches.
Two guys can probably handle it, depends on what is required to get it out. Won't know till you get there. Appliance dolly and two wheeler will probably be needed.
Look for warping and cracked welds, discoloration. Typical signs of overfire.
Should fit in your van.

Two guys can move this. I would also bring some sheet metal if you have it. a 3' square will do. This is to slide the unit out easily without scratching up the hearth. Also bring a set of open end wrenches, a strong appliance dolly and some ratchet straps. I would estimate the stove can be removed in an hour, maybe two if you are also going for the liner. You'll probably need a ladder if the goal is to remove that. Also bring a camera and a pad of paper and take notes + pictures on how it is disassembled to make it easier to reassemble. Good luck!

A $400 Jotul C450 Tamarack in great condition! Plus a flex line flexible liner (about 4 feet) and the block off plate

It took us about an hour or so to get everything out and into the minivan, and it was about half an hour drive from my house! I went with one strong friend, and the guy who sold it to us also helped a lot. I've been waiting for this one for a while! I'm pretty sure that it will fit just fine - may need to do a little brick grinding, but not much. Keeping my fingers crossed, but I figured I could go wrong with this deal.

Yes, Ray, it was a craigslist find. Someone on this site told me a couple months ago to watch out for people buying houses in looking for a good deal on a used stove as some of people just want the wood stoves removed. That was the case here - the guy who sold me the stove had recently sold the house and the new owner just wanted this insert removed. The old home owner was literally moving out today and just thought he could make a couple quick bucks if he marked it low enough to sell quick - it worked out well for everyone!

Yes, I will scrap (or sell) the four foot liner and go all the way up with a fully insulated liner.

I remember back the year I installed the 30. Replacing the old insert. A month after the install I was looking on craigslist and lo and behold a new in the crate Kennebec for 700.

They are out there. If you want to pay the heating bill till you find them.

Congrats on the heater. You got a great deal on a great insert.

That is one awesome deal on that insert. Since you saved all that money on the unit, definetley make sure you go all out on the liner and block off plate. Enjoy and start stock piling that wood. Also, I think that new homeowner is gonna kick themselves later for getting rid of the insert.

And today I got a 30" x 48" hearth pad for FREE on craigslist The 35 minute drive from my house was totally worth it. It's a nice grey, blue and red slate covered fireboard with wood trim on three sides. If you keep looking there are some really good finds on craigslist!

No, BeGreen, it's all true, and I haven't gotten ALL the good deals on craigslist as Raybonz suggested - just most of them! :coolsmirk: Just keep checking craigslist about a million times a day, and also check out searchtempest.com, which will let you check multiple craigslists from different areas/states, etc.

Here's a pic of the heathpad, this was from the craigslist ad, and it looks kind of dingy here - looks much better in real life. As for the Jotul, I should have taken a pic before removing or taken the pic from the ad (which has since been removed), but it's now in pieces with the surround removed, doors off, etc, so you'll have to wait until the install!

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that the jotul is going to fit/work in my chimney - I've got a reputable chimney company coming tomorrow to do an cleaning, inspection and recommendation - I'm going to put up a separate post about that to pick the good people on this site's brains!
