I moved into a new house and was curious how we would fare supplementing our existing heating system with wood. I picked up a Vogelzang Colonial on craigslist for near next to nothing, lined the chimney, and away we went. A couple of months into it we are longing for a insert that produces a little more heat and holds more wood. What I am considering is going to a Drolet Escape 1400i. The drolet has a 60,000 btu rating which is actually lower than the stated 69,600 btus the vogelzang produces (although vogelzang also says 'EPA constant - 27,257 BTUs). We are heating a 1900 square foot two story house. Will I get much of an improvement by making this change or do I need to get something way bigger? Any idea why both inserts btu output is so close even though one is about 1/3 bigger? We are happy with the temp at 68 which the current insert can do to about 20 degrees. Lower than 20 we need to fire the boiler to get the initial temperature and then we can maintain 68.
