Hello.
This is my first post and I’m hoping for some great response.
I just got done with a massive over haul of a 50 year old 118. Took it completely apart installed new gaskets paint the whole nine. Installed a chimney liner and now am heating my home.

Couple questions.
How hot should this stove be burning at.?
I have a thermometer right now on the top plate. Is that the correct place?

Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

The F118 is a willing heater and will run at about 650F easily with dry wood. Try to keep it below 750F and it should be fine.
