So my co-worker is putting his Hearthstone stove in the basement of their new-to-them ranch style home. He wants me to help him, and he tells me today that he has already bought Supervent class A chimney to run up the inside of the existing 13" x 13" masonry chimney from the fireplace in the basement.
His plan is to cut through the brick above the fireplace to tie into the chimney but also wants to put a "drop leg" on the bottom of the tee to make an accessible clean out from the now unused fireplace opening. I do have an idea about how to work through the details of making this happen, albeit a challenge for sure. I'm thinking I may try to talk him into going to a insulated flex liner instead, but I also know he can be VERY bullheaded. Anybody know of any reasons why his plan is more than just a time consuming challenge, like actually a bad idea/dangerous?

If he has a compromised chimney (how old is his house?), then a class A chimney in the chase is sometimes the only option. It had been proposed at one time as the only solution to one of my troublesome chimneys. Yes, the install cost was enormous, mostly due to the labor.

If the existing chimney is not badly compromised, then a blanket-wrapped flex liner is usually the best course.

One issue is going to be supporting the class A. It is supposed to have a support every 8'. The other obvious issue is cost and hassle. An insulated liner is the proper solution. Send him here if he balks.

Yeah, I had thought of the pipe bracing issue...I thought maybe it wasn't as big of a deal since it cant go too far in the existing chimney. Also, I think he said something about using some type of pour down insulation to "support it"
I agree, cost...check
hassle...check

Like I said, I'll see if I can't talk him out if it...I don't mind helping people, but when they ignore sound advice...GRRR. Better not get wound up yet, maybe he'll listen, or, maybe, maybe I'll tell 'im tah pound sand...well, maybe not, still gotta work with the guy everyday, and, don't wanna see anything bad happen to the guy or his fam.

Wall braces are important. Otherwise what is helping support the weight of 20 or 30 ft of class A pipe? That is not trivial. Suggest your co-worker call up Selkirk support and ask these questions.

The only issue I see is supporting the pipe. A tee support could be used in the existing fireplace possibly, finding a good place to anchor it would be the issue. A section of pipe can be placed below the Tee, and this be attached to the support. A Tee support can support 35' of chimney or so, I see no reason to attach it anywhere else except centering it in the flue at the top.

That being said, there is no reason at all to do it this way. An insulated flex liner would be a much easier option. Each option carrying a lifetime warranty but only the latter being designed for this application.

I agree support will be an issue That and it will just be a real pain in the ass to assemble i don't know why you would choose to do it. There is really no benefit over an insulated heavy flex liner. Class a will hold up a little better than light wall flex but even light wall will hold up very well unless it is abused. If he is that concerned about durability go with rigid liner it is still a pain to install but a hell of a lot lighter than class a. But again id use insulated flex

Oh I hear ya brother, but it is his party...he seems pretty set on it. Maybe I can change his mind once we start on it and he sees what a PITA it is gonna be!
Thanks guys!
