rotted elm?

Hi all

My neighbor took down a tree recently. They said they took it down because it's rotted and it's an elm.

1. can you please verify that it's an elm?

2. does it seem to be rotted? If so, is it OK to split them and use as firewood?

The wood doesn't seem to all be from the same tree. In the first picture, the wood with bark on it is Pine. Any wood that splits in pieces rather then chunks of rot is fine to use as firewood.

good catch. claydogg84. the first photo is indeed of pine.

is the darker center the rot or that's all elm looks like that in the middle?

Those rounds don't show an visible rot, but I can't for sure say they are elm.

The rounds do look like American elm, the dark stained center is very common but not a sign of rot. Burn it if you can split it ;-)

I had a rotten elm come down - Just scooped out the rotten stuff and cut up the rest. "Split" is a relative term with elm, rotten or otherwise...
