Roxul fireplace insert around sides behind cover plate surround?

I installed my Hearthstone Clydesdale w/ 1/2" liner insulation, Roxul at top of chimney and at bottom with a sheet metal block off plate. Can I add it to the sides of the opening where the cover plate surround is?

You shouldn't need to insulate there if you have the block-off plate. Any gaps where the surround meets your fire place facing material will allow additional heat into the room...
