Feeling the Heat

Lastnight, a friend of mine "tagged" me on facebook in a local area sales page. A gentleman was selling 61 bags of pellets (by Dry Creek) for 220 bucks. Instantly i messaged him and found out he was like 5 miles from my house. Told him id get in touch with him in the morning.

This morning i went to work and found out i had won on a raffle ticket (free 200 bucks...NICE...pellets here i come!..it was a 5 dollar ticket) As the day got a little later, about 8 or 9am, i called the guy. He said he had about 61 bags of pellets, a tote full of corn and some other stuff i may want. i said sweet, ill be in touch after work.

Showed up this evening, loaded 64 bags of Dry creek pellets, 1 bag of lignetics and a Pellet chimney system that was brand new. haha. like, used but only 3 times. ENded up giving that to my buddy who came with me cuz his parents wanted to get a stove, and i figured this was a nice gesture for helping me and just cuz he's a good friend of mine.

PRettty good day for me. Sometimes nice guys dont finish last! For 5 bucks, i scored like 500 bucks worth of stuff! Hell yah! So whats the scoop on the pellets? ive read good and bad about them. One thing i DID notice, some of them damn things are really long. i measured and kept 1 of them outta the bag thats 2" long!! holy crap!

Ill try a bag or 2 and see how they do...worst comes to worst, ill burn my sets and sell the rest of the DC's. haha.

Sounds like you scored there you've got better luck than me.with the pellets being so long if their a problem some people drop or rough up the bag of pellets to break them up a little hope they work good for you

Hey wagz where are you at in Pa I live in indiana

Nice score on the pellets and a kind thing to do for your friend's parents ... are you one of their "spare" children? We have a few of the kids friends that qualify for that here;lol

Sweet! Now you saved enough cash for an Eco Fan!

Hahaha. I think I'll be passing on the Ecofan.

Just don't drop em to hard. The bags can blow out and then you have pellets everywhere. Ask me how I know this:oops:;)

haha, not to them im not a spare kid, just a good neighbor. i beleive in Karma...and when it comes back around, i prefer it to be good! i got CRAP for luck. lol seems that the more good stuff i do the more good stuff i get in return..unless im at work. hahaha.

As for the pellets, i ripped a bag open to check em out despite the reviews i read about them...some of the damn thigns are like 2+ inches long...so i guess ill be building a screen i can pour a bag out on top of and manually going through them... It'll be a pain in my butt im sure, but atleast i know they wont clog my auger. Im sure they'd go through no problem but my luck illl get screwed! hahaha.

5 bucks is close enough to free for me hahaha. I been reading more and more lately since winter is here and some ppl seem to say a lot of ash is due to fines in your bags. However, who knows for sure. Ash and clunkers I'd say are due to moisture and the wood compounds that make the pelle . Along with binders. I don't much care as long as they burn and make heat. I plan on building a screening setup to help clean fines and alow me to break up the honkin sized pieces. This will also allow my 5 years old son to help also. Got this sweet idea brewing in my head, just gotta make it work!

IMo, don't bother sifting fines. just dump the bag in. IF you're going to do it, do it for dusty pouur reasons, not burnability.

These, and most decent pellets, do not use any binding agents whatsoever.

Biggest reasons ill be sifting the DC pellets is cuz of some of they sizes i found. i found pellets 2" or bigger so imma bust em up and sift em all in one shot. i bought some material today, i think it'll turn out nice.

I'm burning Dry Creek right now. Bought 2 tons this summer when on sale for $219 a ton. I'm finding them to have low ash and go through my system just fine. The heat from them is average to high. I did notice some large pellets when filling hopper (poured them in anyways) but have run a good 25 bags now with no problems. Enjoy at that great cost.

Awseome! Glad to hear they're ok! I'm in garage now planning my creation.

so made my screening device lastnight, and began screening... Im a bit surprised at what i had found so far.

I screened 6 bags total since lastnight. 3 Somersets, and 3 DC's... I got more fines outta 1 bag of somersets than i did outta 2 bags of DC's? Intersting! One major factor of this might be due to size of the 2 pellets. Somersets are a smaller more uniform size whereas DC's are bigger. Some i had to manually break by hand. Either way...ive now got 120lb of each ready to burn! Heck yes! lol Oh and some corn to mix in..gonna have to research corn mixtures.

I've noticed a decent amount of fines in some of my Somersets too. The P68 doesn't care though. I don't see that in every bag just some more than others. Same ton too.

yah i did the DC's becuase of size. then i did the somersets cuz i ran low the other day and seen a TON of fines in my hopper. Sucked em out and decided to screen some sets for the hell of it. i was pretty surprised!

I was also with three bags in particular. Not sure what was going on there. Bags came on the same skid and were on the bottom originally so that might explain it some. Possibly left from another run down in Somerset, KY so they started the pallet off with em? Most other bags have been exactly like what I have seen with my ProPellets. Thy look identical, burn the same, etc; Some of the Pro's can be slightly long too vs. the majority of Sets.

After seeing this I I have a better understanding of the fines and how they can FUBAR some units augers and workings up. If I do get the PAH this week I might be sure to screen for that unit. That IMO would be a good practice for any stove for that matter. It will give me another project I can do and knock back a few oat sodas (beers) safely::-). Doubt there is much of any occupational hazard there. If you get hurt screening pellets well ya might want to opt for the utility co. beat downs. I would consider it multi-tasking!:)

hahaha, yah i agree, bout the only real damage i could see anyone doing by screening is either throwing out their back or knocking the screener over on them selves. lol however, like i always say to ppl that know me, always expect the un-expected when im around! lol

Owen, Was just curious, Can a thermostat be hooked to my unit? How would it work if so? It aint got auto ignite so i assume it'd have to stay lit?

Yes it can be hooked up.. It would have to stay lit. If you were to set the stove to HR 2,3 or 4 It would run on those settings when the TStat is calling for heat. When it is not it would lower itself back down to a HR1
