Good saws. External clutch if I remember right....

Shindaiwa offers a 2 year warranty....

This is a pro level saw. 10 pounds, just shy of 50 cc's.... I think it reviews very good from pros....

How much?

Ive got a Husqvarna 272 and a Sthil 025 that I'm looking to work a deal out with the dealer on trade. He's looking to get 399.00
for the saw. The 272 is way more than I need and the 025 is not enough!!

I sold Shindiawa saws for several years (along with Echo) and they are in fact top notch commercial saws with the 488 being one of their best.. You will not be sorry with your purchase, and will continue to love it for years if you care for it properly..

Seems like a fair deal.

He doesn't sell Dolmar does he? ;-)

Every maker, no matter how well renowned, has one (sometimes a couple) of models that are "classics" - superb performers with great longevity. For Shindaiwa, it's the 488.

Great saw. You will never regret owning one.

The local Shindaiwa dealer claims to like the 490 better than the 488. He mentioned carburator and the ignition was better on the 490. I believe he had the 490 priced around $370. I am about ready to buy another saw and liked the looks of the Shindiawas, also looking at the Husky 346XP and the Dolmar 5100.

The 490 is nothing more than a late-model 488 in a new shroud. To the best of my knowledge, only the cosmetics were changed - which means it's a great saw.

A tiny bit heavier.... Wonder if it is the new EPA 488....

That is not what the dealer claimed, said the carburator was adjustable? and the igniton was improved, should have been listening closer, next visit back will get specifics.

The carb is definitely non-adjustable; it's an EPA compliant unit, which mandates sealed adjustments. The ignition has never been an issue, so I'm not sure how it is "improved", but they may have changed something minor.

Again, the 488 and 490 are, for all practical purposes, the same saw. Buy whichever one the dealer has on the shelf, as it really doesn't matter - they're a great piece of gear!

Good saw, but I'm not sure that it really splits the difference between the 025 and the 272. You should be able to sell those two saws and have enough for a good 60cc saw, which would split the difference better than the 488/490 would.
