Should a catalyst get red hot?

It doesn’t need to glow to be working properly but certainly can glow. Red to orange. Sometimes almost yellow!

You want it hot, if it is used not only to clean up the exhaust but also to provide the majority of the heat (when running at low output).
My stove running low has a firebox full of black wood in it, and you have to squint to see some glowing (it is there) and a large part of the heat is provided by the glowing brick (cat)on top.

It is fine for it to glow, you just want to make sure it doesn't overheat.
