Yes, it can. It's fine as long as it stays under 1500ºF.

You want it hot, if it is used not only to clean up the exhaust but also to provide the majority of the heat (when running at low output).

My stove running low has a firebox full of black wood in it, and you have to squint to see some glowing (it is there) and a large part of the heat is provided by the glowing brick (cat)on top.
