Howdy folks, sent my 3 year old 30-nc packing, great stove for the $ but to much heat for my house, if I had a basement I would have kept it. This fireview is simply amazing to me in quality and performance. The stove is in our living room and the 30 put out a mean 500-550 degree heat that was intense, but now the soft soapstone heat really is "softer". I'm able to regulate temps better, using less wood and dont have smoke problems when the door is opened. But the 30 was $600 and the fireview $2200 always will have respect for the 30, but for my place the fireview was a great choice.
That is one of my biggest pet peeves about my NC30. I dread opening the door to reload it because i ALWAYS get a face full of smoke.

Any idea what causes the smoke spillage on the NC30??? Just curious....

Im all ears. I have a 3 foot rise double wall going into a 90 degree elbow then out the house going to a 20 feet Class A chimney. I finally got great advice from Pen about lighting her up without getting the house full of smoke. I havent had to use the method since I have been burning nonstop since last week.

I open the air control for about 10 seconds before opening the door. Then I unlatch it and open the door about half an inch, wait another few secs, then open the door slowly.

This seems to help with smoke coming back in the room.

I seem to get it every time I reload when there is more than just coals. I am willing to bet that the inertia of the smoke moving from the back to the front carries it out rather than bending almost 180 degrees. If I hold my ash shovel across the top, it seems to stop most of the smoke.

If I open the door during a burn when temps are ~450 - 525 degrees or so, I'll get a bit of smoke coming out of the door.

If I open it with a 600+ degree stove top, not a bit comes out.

So i guess the solution is to burn at 600 plus in order to not get spillage. Thanks.

The other suggestions given are important too (open air for a bit, open door slowly)

The hotter it is, less smoke there will be often, plus there will be more draft.

Or, just let things ride in the stove as they are and don't open it until it's down to coals. Try changing how you are initially loading the stove so that you don't have to throw wood in during that part of the burn or readjust logs? If you are burning E-W, try N-S?

!'d also check to see that stovepipe is sealed at each joint. It may help some. I sealed mine and it made a big difference. Better secondaries too.

That's good advice but mine dont seem to leak at all, checked it with a punk several times, must have something to do with the brand of stove pipe?

Sealed at every joint? It is not sealed, what did you use to seal it? Can you recommend what product to use to seal the joints? Mine is an adjustable double wall pipe for ease of cleaning.

Thanks Oldspark. I believe the Tractor Supply and or Home Depot carries these.

Why are you opening the door prior to it being coals anyways?
Load it full, burn to coals, do all voer again. No smoke comes out when it is coals.
