something under insert to make it easier to remove

i'm going to be installing a new hearth soon. i was planning to use granite. is there something i can put under my st. croix york insert to make to easier to slide in and out for servicing, and will also protect the stone? there is slate under the insert now and it's getting beat up from moving the stone in and out.

If this is a temporary move, try using sheet metal. Place a piece of 24, 26 gauge sheet metal (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) in front of the insert, slide it out onto the sheet metal, do whatever servicing is necessary, slide the insert back into its operational position, store the sheet metal for future use. Heavy stoves will slide with surprising ease over sheet metal.

yeah just temporary for cleaning and what not. what about a fireproof rug? that would slide pretty easy on granite.

Am I missing something here? How would you get your stove onto your fireproof rug? Seems like you would have to lift your stove up in order to get the stove onto the rug. A guy can get hurt lifting a heavy stove up. Maybe you could elaborate a bit more as to what are your specific plans...

the insert will be sitting on granite tile. i usually slide it out about 2 feet 2x per year for cleaning. it's currently sitting on slate and the slate tile are getting destroyed from sliding the stove on them. they were pretty much like that when we moved into the house. after i put the new granite down, i would like to put something between the granite and the stove that would allow me to slide the stove out 2ft without damaging the underlying stone. i think i'm going to use a fireproof mat. that rail system, while neat, is way over kill for what i'm talking about.

I'm not sure how your stove is but my lopi had 4 adjustment bolts I was able to remove them and install small metal casters that my dad had in the garage and I use two metal blocks to stop it from moving no reason to over engineer something so simple just saying

we use a 3/16 thick sheet of aluminum 2' x 3' and slide the unit out on the aluminum, works pretty good 9 times out of 10

I made a set of low profile wheels for my York. I bought the 2" diameter straight casters (not swivel type) from Home Cheapo for a couple bucks each and welded up some 2 X 2 X 1/8 angle iron so the the bottom of the wheel was about 1/8" below the bottom of the bracket. This only raises the stove 1/4" off the floor. It rolls out like a charm and doesn't scratch the tile.

I have Marble so I stuck some of those furniture pads with peel off sticky glue underneath insert. First put em in in 2008 and just a week ago changed them out for new ones only cause they didn't want to stick to the steel anymore.
