Stihl 029

What is the quality of the Stihl 029? I found one in the local paper for sale for $200. Currently I have a husky 142 for limbing and bucking smaller stuff (up to 10" or so) and was looking for something that can handle up to 16-18" maple, hickory and cherry. Would this be a good saw for that? I looked on Stihl's website and didn't see 029 listed... is it the same as the 290 farm boss?

Should work for that job very nicleyand yes same saw the o29 is older saw

MS290 and 029 are the same saw, just different vintages. Assuming that the 029 is in good condition (at a minimum pull the muffler and check out piston/cylinder condition), it will definitely handle the wood you have in mind for it to cut up. A 18" bar seems to feel best on this saw, in my experience, though it is equally happy with a 16" or 20" bar, too.

Joe my 041 3.73 cu in or 61cm to the 3rd power so the point is I don't think the 029 has a relationship to the cc's. But let me be clear I'm no tech head...just a wood cutting sumbasti is all.

i think they change the # about 5-6 years ago and 425.00 in 1977 and it still running 200.00 for a good ruuning 029 not bad.

Guess you're not too up on the used saw market. $200 for a lower hours running 029 is pretty much the norm, especially with the MS290 retailing for $359 nowadays.

Not quite sure what your 041 has to do with anything, but thanks for sharing all the same!

I just brought the MS290 and I love it (six cords so far). Been cutting with and old echo for about 18 years. Wondering why I didn't buy MS290 sooner. Hey the kids don't call me Mr Crabs for nothing

A 290 is not the most powerful saw in it's weight class nor is it the lightest, but for shear dependability and versitility it is almost unrivaled. There is a reason they are the # 1 selling saw in their segment of the market and have been for quite some time.

I'm a new MS290 owner as well. With a 20" bar I paid $ 379 a few weeks ago.

Compared to the 20" Craftsman it replaced, it's a dream to use.

I love it. (Even if it's a "heavy dog" as many on this forum like to call it.)

i used the 029 for better than 10 years, trade it in this spring still running!

The 290 is a good saw and for $200 you likely can't go wrong if the saw is in good shape and has good compression.

If you decide to go new however, I would save a little more money and jump into the pro range saws like the Dolmar PS-5100, Stihl MS-260, or Husky 346XP.

Also very satifsfied with the 290. Weight is the only complaint, but that is minor.
