I have an Napoleon insert that sits on a 2" thick cement pad and 1/2" thick marble tile hearth. Then the hearth has been extended using marble tile and cement board. There is one tile that takes that brunt of the radiant heat from the insert glass door (this would be the area of the hearth that was extended). Would a stove board in front of the insert be the way to go to absorb that radiant heat?

That's what I use. When company comes or for the summer I just slide it under the couch.
