My neighbor has this stove and asked me to fix the door handle. It looks to me like the latch screws into the handle before you tighten the set screw, but the threads are all messed up. Anybody recognize this stove and can confirm the handle function so I can get get her fixed up?

Looks like some kind of hearthstone stove. Is there an ID tag in the back?

That or try a piece of aluminum foil as a shim to take up room and give something soft for the threads to bite into.

Can you just chase the threads?
Looks like the bottom threads on the "pin" part are smashed. See if you can clean those up.

The threads on both parts are more damaged than that pic suggests. I don’t see them getting cleaned up. She has manhandled this for so long it just needs replacing.

ok if you can't find the part what if you screwed the pin/latch back in as best as you can and mark the location of the set screw depth wise on the pin.
Then drill an indent in the slot right where the set screw would make contact. That way the set screw can hold the proper depth on the pin without sliding down the slot due to the threads not holding.

Then maybe a touch of light duty thread locker on the set screw threads.

That makes sense to me. A drop of paint down the hole or a marker could mark the spot. Center punch if you want to get fancy.

A full frontal view of the stove would help. Does it have a side loading door?

I agree with BG, ID the stove and get the replacement part. It does look like a HS stove, maybe a Castleton? There should be an ID lanyard attached, or it scribed in back of stove along with the assembler of the stove's name from HS. Good luck.

The Castelton is a good guess. It would help to have a full picture. If it is, then the door latch parts are:
