Stove top stuff - pics.

Hi folks,
we have several uses for the stovetop, kettle, coffee pot, casserole, even got tin mugs which can be placed on top if the coffee goes cold, was wondering what other things are placed on top.
Maybe some great ideas that I haven't thought of ?.







By the way, this is by far the best website for anyone into woodburning anywhere in the world.

When I installed my stove I got the break-in fire just right and left to run a few erands. When I got back my 12YO Son had a pot of potaoes boiling away. They had learned to cook on wood fired stoves camping in the bush, and were excited to try it at home. Being VERY careful not to drip water on to the enamel surfaces ; )

I've done eggs, chili, soup, oatmeal. You could do grilled cheese and variants.
Takes a little longer than on the electric kitchen stove, but that thing is a power hog, so I don't mind.
Others have done pizza in the stove,... seems like someone baked bread.

I found that toast directly on the stone of my stove does nicely - toasts it without drying out the bread if stone is hot enough. I used to keep a pot of water to boil on the stove but after tracking the room humidity I decided it really didn't make a material difference for the amount of trouble to keep it filled etc - I think we get more water in the air from the laundry drying on the line near the stove and no fear of the pot going dry and smelling up the place

I've never seen them before - before I go googling around, anyone have any suggestions on where to get these (Canada)?

Billy bonfire - are those porcelain coffee mug and percolator? Looks similar to some of my favorite camping gear (nothing like a fresh coffee perked on a camp fire grille). Where did you get the metal tray (left side, middle pic)? Sorry guys for all the questions - aside from an old cast iron pot and kettle, I'm a top-of-the-inside-stove-cool-gadget neophyte.

While on the topic - I know I've seen references to folks putting dutch ovens on their stoves... Anyone have a good source for dutch ovens without feet/legs? I.e. one that will sit flat on top of the stove to maximize the surface contact? Nice and tall is what I imagine would be best for what I want.

Now that you mention it the same place I bought my Osburn once stocked a stove with oven attached on top. Can't recall the manufacturer - seemed like an interesting idea but the stoves -at least the "oven" part - seemed a bit lightweight to me. I haven't seen them since that year

Hi bag of hammers, glad you like the Le Creuset stuff, they are very good (and heavy) but a bit expensive, paid £65 for the kettle, was a bit annoyed because about 2 weeks later saw the same one for £40. Dont you just hate it when that happens.
The coffee mugs and pot are just the enamel type used by builders and the trivet I found in a junk shop, £2, bargain

Not sure about canada, I got mine at Bloomingdale's then found some at TJ Maxx.

Just curious, what is the white on the Le Creuset kettle? Did you have to seal the lid? I'm looking for a nice kettle for the top of our stove.

General question: is it okay to allow an enamel on steel kettle to go dry at stove top temps? I'm sure this will happen now and then around here...

Hi Sprinter, the white stuff is scale from the hard water in our area, kettles need de-scaling now and then. Not sure exactly what the technical term is but it is quite harmless (possibly calcium ?).
The lid doesn't need sealing, it is quite a tight fit, the kettle is made for stove top use. Only negative is now and then the whistle goes off with a start, quite loud and can make you jump a bit, when boiled I put it on the trivet and it ticks over nicely .
I think the enamel should be ok, have seen them put on open fires on building sites.

Thanks. The reason I ask is that I've heard it's risky to use enameled things on electric glass-top stoves, but I'm not sure why. Apparently, the enamel can actually bond to the glass or something.

Le creuset ouets are great and they have online deals as well. Costco sells a few pieces of their own label of enameled cast iron but I've not tried that.
