Hi Folks

First time to clean my chimney. Because of a slick metal roof, I need to clean it from inside by removing the single wall stove pipe. The problem is, the darn thing is stuck - the slip joint won't slip.

One issue is that there's nowhere to get a good purchase or leverage to squeeze the joint together. About the only way to move things around is giving it a good bear hug. I've tried some banging near the joint which didn't help.

So far I see two options: 1) remove the stove legs and carefully lower the stove. 2) get out the sawzall.

Any tips?

Tried with rubber gloves (washing up gloves) on?

You can use a strap wrench. Basically a rubber strap with a handle. Strap wraps around object, slips inside handle and you can get pretty good torque w/o damaging the object.

Got It!

I tried using something similar to a strap wrench - large hose clamps and used a tourniquet technique to try to draw the sleeves together, but it did not budge. Rubber gloves were a great idea, but this sucker was stuck!

What worked was carefully peeling the seam apart.

The problem stemmed from the little burrs caused by the sheet metal screws. The fit was very tight to begin with, but being overly cautious I felt it necessary to screw the pipes together during the install. A little hammering and filing will fix the burs and hopefully I'll be able to re-bend the seam so it will all return to normal.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Brad
