I looked at gas "stoves" and soon realized that for a given BTU I could instead look for the "console" style that used to be popular decades ago: Ugly stamped steel exteriors that hide all the heater bits. (They're cheaper.)

I still see these available. Williams has the old style. Empire has one that tries to be a little fancy with a window for the flame. Ashley seems to want to update the look a little. And then more modern designs from Martin and Rinnai. Seems to be about it, are there more? Even a $2000 Rinnai EX38 is about half the cost of a classic cast iron "stove" type from the better names that play to that clientele.

I mainly want gas (LP) heat, something in the 30-40K range would work. The ability to use an external thermostat is a plus. And I want it direct-vented; I need to sit it on the floor and run intake/exhaust up towards the ceiling and out horizontally.
