I'm struggling to find a manual for my fireplace. We purchased the home recently and have not used the fireplace yet and would like to change that. To be honest, I'm not even sure how to work it. I've never had a fireplace with a blower. It does have gas but the ID tag on it says to use only solid wood fuel. It did not come with gas logs or a grate so its just an empty fireplace with a small tray and what looks like some type of sand covering the bottom. I can't seem to find a manual online for it either. Can you guys help me find it or maybe shed some light on how to get it going?

Can you post a pic of what you have?
I can hear gas flowing when I turn the valve on but the pipe that's separate has slits that look like they would allow gas to flow. The pipe in the tray doesn't have any openings (on the top at least).

I'd say you have a gas log set installed in there, but it looks to be incomplete.
I don't see a control valve anywhere. Where are you turning the gas flow on?
I'd sweep the sand, vermiculite & rock wool out of there &
take a look under the pan to see if there's a rating plate
for Identification purposes...

I think I had the same thing, I recognize the wire mesh screen (barely visible in the photo), and I bet you have those nice accordion brass doors too. That's a gas fire starter for wood logs.

@DAKSY There is a gas valve on the side of the fireplace. There was a brass colored sticker on it but nothing else.

@FPX Dude correct on the wonderful brass doors. A gas starter for wood logs would be ideal. I'm confused about the pipe with slits in it that's not connected to anything.

Definitely a log lighter, now that I can see the valve.
The slotted pipe may have been removed & replaced
with one that's in there to keep someone from using the system.
If you feel confident, switch em out, & look up gas log lighters
& their usage.

I don't think that is supposed to be a log lighter. It looks just like the gas log set I had in my Superior fireplace, but this one is incomplete. I can still see the sand and material that makes it look like hot embers when lit. Typically the sand covers the entire black pipe so the gas comes up through the sand. That fuzzy insulation looking material goes on top of the sand and turns red when hot. The logs are missing.

Maybe somebody tried converting it to a log lighter.

I was originally thinking it was a gas fireplace. After seeing the "use solid wood fuel only" on the ID tag though I'm leaning toward it being a wood burning fireplace with gas log lighter.

I was able to get it to light without adding the extra pipe. The flames came out the bottom of the pipe and were spaced about the same as the pipe with slits that isn't installed. I may try getting a log in there to see how it goes.

It's a log lighter, read the tag "use solid WOOD FUEL ONLY". Used it for many years to light cords of ammin.
