My 1995 Superior GRD-5500NE-2 B-vent gas fireplace (serial number 1477, installed 1995) needs a new burner. The one currently installed (see photo) has angled edges, pilot about 5.5" from the burner face. I ordered Superior/Lennox's only listed replacement for this model, H8286 (see second photo), but it is rectangular, with the pilot over 7" away — it doesn't physically fit. The seller checked with the manufacturer: their records only go back to H8286, and either a different burner was installed in my unit at some point, or mine is an earlier revision whose documentation didn't survive Superior's ownership changes (Superior → Lennox → IHP).
So the real question: which one is actually correct for this unit — and depending on the answer:
- If H8286 is correct, how would I restore the unit to accept it (relocate/adapt the pilot, or is there a documented kit)?
- If the angled burner is the correct original, is there a source or part number for it, since it needs replacing?
I'd like to replace this with a different fireplace, but: our surround is irreplaceable antique Batchelder tile, so removing the unit from either the front or back risks damaging it, and the firebox itself is only 11" deep — too shallow for any electric log set or insert we've found. Getting the original gas setup right is the path with the least risk to the tile.
Thanks for any insight.
