Tax Credit 25C - Federal Tax Credit Eligible on Biomass heating appliance of up to $300 for 2013 as part of fiscal cliff

UPDATE: The current tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar credit on qualifying residential energy property expenditures, up to $300. HPBA initially reported the tax credit incorrectly as 10% of qualifying residential energy property expenditures, up to $300

$300 Biomass Stove Tax Credit Reinstated for 2012 - 2013

A federal tax credit on 75 percent efficient biomass heating appliances, which expired on December 31, 2011, was reinstated by the “fiscal cliff” legislation, the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (H.R. 8), signed by President Obama on January 2, 2013. The bill includes a “tax extender” for Internal Revenue Service Section 25C which provides a tax credit for, among many other things, qualifying biomass burning stoves. The extender provides a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $300 on a qualifying biomass heating appliance purchased between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2013. The credit claimable on the purchase or installation of qualifying biomass units is limited to a “lifetime limit” of $500 (and may be impacted by the purchase or installation of other products that qualify of a 25C credit). The credit for tax year 2012 is claimed on IRS Form 5695. HPBA recommends all individuals consult with their tax advisor for details on the applicability of the tax credit.

I know we are, it was one of the reason's I got my wife to finally pull the trigger on getting the pellet stove in Nov instead of waiting another winter. I know for us the $100 off Harman coupon, the free ton of Currans Softwoods and the $300 tax credit made the decision to buy easier.

I believe the original credit dates back to 2009. If you have used any or part of this credit since then, you will only have the remaining amount when you file by April 2014.

At it's conception, the credit was 30% or $1500...whichever was smaller.

My accountant confirmed this a few weeks back. Maxed mine out in 2010.

Sort of stupid policy, IMO, to cap this at such a small amount. We essentially just pay lip service to energy conservation / efficiency, and then wonder why we have so many problems resulting from it.

Thanks for that info!

I believe it expires this year.
Yes, you are correct. The recent passed budget does not contain an extension on this portion.

Same here.
We're definitely going to use it

It expired last year but was brought back. Doubt it stays dead this year. Kinda hope they kill it so I can qualify for a new version.

I bought one eligible stove in 2012 and another in 2013... does anyone know if I can amend my 2012 return to claim the $300 credit for the one I bought in 2012? (recognizing it would limit my 2013 credit to $200)

Why not just take the whole shot on the 2013 one?

Ah ha. Forgot about that. I only needed $143 last time so I didn't bump it.

In that case an amended return is the way to go. Unless ya gotta pay somebody what ya get back just to file the return.
