Been offline waiting for chimney sweep. As you folks indicated, it was a clogged cap (the mesh) that caused the problem. Sweep found about 2qt of chimney debris, but he did not see any of the glazed creosote. Will only need 1X sweep/year in his estimation. Gratefully back burning. Lit up like a champ!
