Does anybody else ever wonder why it takes firewood so long to season and only a week for a Christmas tree to start shedding like cat?

Does anybody else wonder why it takes all spring & summer to scrounge up a supply of firewood & then split it and season it & stack it and then it all disappears in the 4 weeks around Christmas & you end up hoping that you have enough still left to get through the rest of the winter with? ;-P

Yeap, cause even though its not much effort, the oil bill can go $2,400.00+, least thats what motivates me anyways.
Besides, I need the work out.

Ditto that here. I have all this down wood to clean up anyway. Why spend 200 a month for LP gas? This is the way for me to go, burn the wood for heat and not the gas.

The real question is, why don't women loose their clothes as fast as an xmas tree looses its needles? ;)

Because our minds DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT think like a man's. ;-)

Well thank you for that most valuable input!
Now, is there a way we can get women mentally altered to think like a man in this dept? :)

Back to the original idea of this thread...

Next year, add some sugar to the water and you won't have so much shedding. We keep our tree up 4-5 weeks with no lost needles. Speaking of the tree, the wife said it is coming down today...and it has not shed any needles.

btw, we cut our own tree and put it up that day or the next.

No great mystery . . . if you took a hardwood tree comparable in size to the Christmas tree I would suspect that they would both lose their needles/leaves around the same time if not watered.

The folks at the National Christmas Tree Association say nothing special is needed in the water to keep a tree fresh . . . except to make a fresh cut and keep it well watered. I would suspect that the reason your tree does so well is that it's fresh cut, put up quickly and then kept watered . . . but then again sugar is pretty cheap so if you believe it's working for you I'd say keep doing it -- it certainly can't hurt things as long as you aren't suddenly invaded by ants, honeybees or hummingbirds. ;) :)

Nice chilled bottle of Red Cat, works wonders!

The neighbors idiot teenager decided it would be a good idea to light fire to his tree in the driveway last weekend.

That son of a groan went up like a pile of kindling! Scary stuff. Scared the crap out of him too because he came running back out of the garage with an opened hose to put it out.

Do any of you guys actually burn your trees (in a stove!), or do you just toss them like the rest of the world. Seems too much work to toss in the stove to me.....

Mine is chopped up into firepit sized pieces right now awaiting its fate. It is drying out in the wheelbarrow. We have a bit of a tradition where we limb the tree while still on the stand and then buck the trunk down logger style.

We get a permit from the forest service and then drive high into the mountains above 4000 feet to pick out a Noble. Those trees stay green forever and don't seem to drop any needles.

NO? Final answer? Deal or No deal? ;)
I thought no really meant yes?

Man you gals are tough cookies.

Back on topic, when you buy your tree, make sure you recut the end off prior to setting into tree stand.
Chances are the dealer never cut them since they were delivered and the ends can get dried up and semi sealed off, causing less water intake.
