It has been a while since my last post. My wife veto'ed another outbuilding and all things being equal, I think I would rather have boiler in the house. I decided to excavate a crawlspace under kitchen. I will keep posting progress. And for those that asked, more tractor pics.

Let me be the first to say, holy $#it It sounds like you currently have no basement. If so, you have one heck of a project there - what kind of "crawlspace" are you going to need for a Froling, 1000 gal or so of storage, a decent supply of wood, and enough space to get everything installed? How about footers/floor, and the chimney - chase up the side of the house? But maybe I'm misunderstanding, and you're just tunneling into an existing full-sized basement beyond the kitchen. But in either case I'm frankly in awe of what your're doing there. I'm sure it will turn out great. And I thought it was a big deal getting a boiler into my basement :bug: . Holy $#it

It is a lot of work. There is an existing basement to the right of chimney where the oil burner resides and also on the backside of the crawlspace. This is the only side of the house that I can excavate a straight shot into the basement. I will have enough room for tanks, as for wood storage, most will be in barns. I bought 10 factory/railroad carts at a lumberyard auction to move wood into house.

You will be happy with your setup, great to have the froling in the house.

Gee you make me feel as if i didnt do much at all to start burning wood. I moved oil boiler , lined my chimney, cut a 4x4 hole in basement wall for a wood hatch. And my wife supported me all the way.

I hope the pics are in the correct order. 1st pic is of crawl space before any excavation, next is of the form for the tank well,( 2 500 gal vertical), third is of concrete truck, last is of poured floor and well. The tanks should go in this Friday followed by Boiler. I am scrambling to get door installed to close up foundation.

You da man Walt! Okay, now I don't feel bad at all either. Not for bringing a 1300lb boiler through my basement window with a tow truck. Not for cutting a hole into basement floor and making enough head room to stand up a tank down there. And then move the 975lb tank in with a very large front end loader. And not for spending too much money! It looks like you are making several of us on here feel better about our projects by doing an even bigger project! :lol: Glad to see all is going well for you man. You are going to be a happy camper with that Froling and storage. Are the forms in the floor for the extra head room for tanks? Keep the pics coming. And great job!

Quick Question: Just installed 2 500 gallon tanks vertically, any benefits on plumbing in series vs parallel? The tanks are not symmetrical.

Looking good Walt,

You want these plumb in Parallel, add ball valve to each in/out. Ball valve will help balance the 2 tanks.
You may want to add a air bleader on top of aech tank.

with dissimilar tanks I think I would go series instead of parallel.

These tanks look very close in shape indeed, but I would make sure the dims/specs are similar enough for parallel.

Finally done with install. Been running about a week now and very happy with boiler so far. Still have some things to finish up, mainly insulation, landscaping and cleaning but glad to be off oil now. Just in time for spring!

Looks good, I'll bet your glad to have that running. Looks like a very warm basement till you get insulated.
