We never Have to let the furnace run if we don't want it to. The stove is plenty capable of heating the entire house up to at least 68 degrees at the end of a 9 hour burn cycle. Even when we had below zero temperatures here a few days ago. The oil man is not here but twice a year.
We get 100 gallons in November and 100 gallons in May. That's with 6 people taking showers in my house and all the hot water needed to wash dishes and laundry for a family of six! I must admit, I have let the furnace kick on more often than last year. I've been lazy some weekends and didn't feel like loading the stove 10 hours after the last load was put in. Pre-wood stoves, we used to get at least 400 gallons per heating season. Not counting at least 100 during the warm season. The conclusion is we save at least 300 gallons per year or about $1000 per year burning wood. I wish I could somehow connect a water line to the stove and send it to a storage tank. Then I could almost eliminate the oil consumption altogether.
I love seeing the oil delivery kid. He's really nice, I usually go next door and talk to him when he's filling up the neighboors tank about once a month.
