Thermal Imaging

Just got my new Flir one thermal imaging camera. Time to check the thermal footprint of my stove setup. And do a little heat loss audit on the home as well.

I borrowed a FLIR thermal imaging camera from work last spring to see what it showed for window leakage around my house. I didn't find it very valuable. I hope to try it again and see better results.

How is the resolution on that model? Does it include the image overlay ( MSX Thermal Image Enhancement)?

i have heard that there is a bit of interpretation. thats why inspectors get paid the big bux, lol. But for watching the cars engine for missing cylinders or stove pipe temps... overall uninsulated walls when buying a house. ... seems valuable too me. maby even $1000 valuable depending how long it lasts and how much use I get out of it

Resolution isn't outstanding on the flir one but for the price it works well. Yes it does include msx. Her is a pic of my desk and the meta data from the image.

Here are some thermal images of my stove setup. Pretty interesting. Seeing the >212 temp on the exhaust nakes me feel like there is a lot of wasted heat. I kinda wish there was a way to pill some of the heat off the exhaust before it leaves the house. I belive they make some sort of heat reclaimed for wood stoves. Wonder if they have anything for pelket stoves.







Unfortunately this thing can't measure temps over 212 so I can't use it to compare pelket heat output.

Seems I jumped the gun a bit ordering from Seek Thermal. At least They didn't communicate the fact that the product was not even live yet. As I do more research there are people who ordered in September that have still not got there cameras yet. I guess i'm in for a long wait It did say a 5-7 day wait for "high demand" But apparently they have just today started shipping the first cameras and they started taking orders last month.

A couple of weeks isn't too bad. Otger than checking the pellet vent for leaks I haven't used mine much so far. I'm waiting for the cold weather so I can start checking the house for drafts.

I seem to find uses almost daily. Even as simple as... are there any hot spots in this can of ash still. Alas no camera for me yet. Lol

I seem to recall seeing a vent pipe that had an integral outside air intake, so that the exhaust preheated the combustion air. In effect the exhaust was in a sleeve around the outside air intake. At least some of the exhaust heat would get used that way.

Yup Selkirk DT. Works great for me.

Power vent also has an air feed system. And the harmon DVC(rip)used a square pipe in a pipe.

I don't know if a thermal imaging camera would be a good idea for me.. My house was built in 1840 and I'm thinking it would potentially lead to either depression or a "For Sale" sign in my front yard.

...But they are cool so what the heck, maybe I'll add it to my Christmas wish list!

Dont feel bad, mines from the 1840's also...thats why this Pellet stove is a "test" specimen this year before i go buy a bigger one.
