For 10 clams how can you go wrong if you need/want one. Just know that the red lazer is not the heat sensor, just an aiming device.
 
Where exactly do you aim a thermometer at a wood insert? As you can see with my avatar, the whole box is enclosed. I think most of the time everyone points at the stove pipe, which I don't have access to if I don't take off the shroud.
 
I would guess it is trial and trial - no error involved. Just look for a consistant temp when you are burning in a manner that you like. Hot, clean with full secondary combustion. Beyond that it will be just hitting the same spot to see differences in temps with changes in wood species and burning practices.

I am sure many insert burners will have advice on their temp check practices.
