I just picked up a new Blaze King Princess and I’m pretty excited about it, but I noticed that the thermometer that came with it has a dial on it that is loose and rotates freely on the probe.

This is probably a dumb question but is the nut on the top supposed to be tightened so that the dial can’t rotate and the red needle moves along the dial?

Yes.
Can you show a pic of the dial (so suggestions can be given for where the needle should point at room temp)?

Thanks that was my next question was where should the needle be when the stove is cold? Here is a picture of where it ends up when I tighten it.

Mine is set at the beginning of the line that goes around the outside of the gauge. (7:00 position)

I have a tickmark on the line outside of the thick white area (that contains "inactive zone"), right at the bottom of the inactive zone.
That's where my red needle is at room temp.

Since there is some variation (yours as compared to mine), I guess a safe approach (beyond @BKVP responding with definitive info about your gauge) is to have it near (at or slightly below) the bottom of the thick "inactive zone" area.
