I think stoveliker is proposing that you back the locknut off of the threaded tab, turn the threaded tab as desired, and then hold it while tightening the locknut against the tab to get infinite adjustability. This would mean that the threaded tab would not be locked against the button head.

Right, making sense now. I think if one thought such precise adjustability is called for, it'd make more sense to just not thread the tab (so it can remain snug against the button-head).

I still find it implausible that more than 1/16" (one thread pitch) of precision is needed. Perhaps @BKVP can weigh in. The fact that BK stopped welding the inner nut (IIRC) suggests maybe they though more precision was needed. But I think it's possible they simply removed a superfluous manufacturing step.
