Our thermostat is located about 12 feet from where a wood burning stove has been installed, and wondering how this may end up affecting heat distribution upstairs if the downstairs thermostat isn't representing the actual temperature upstairs. We intend to run the ceiling fans upstairs in reverse to create suction for starters. Based on your experiences, what wisdom can you share on best way to handle this. Thanks.

How can a t-stat read the temp upstairs if it's on the first floor anyway?

It doesnt... whole house is just one zone.

One thermostat for the entire house was very common prior to the last few decades. Most early heating systems, including steam, gravity hot water and gravity hot air, could not be zoned easily. One stat for the entire house and then you balance the heat by adjusting the opening of individual radiator air vents (steam), radiator valves (hot water) or register opening (air).

Even those massive turn of the century Victorian mansions had single zones for this reason.... you just had to deal.
